  2. I have read many replies on "Design is..." when you posted it as a status on FB, which only seemed too ambiguous and too directed if i may say. Most of the things people said were similar, "Design is Everything" "Design is creativity, etc.." But they all seem to be forgetting about something important, something more persistent than the word Design itself. And that is Re-thinking, not Re-designing.
What Qatar needs are the Re-thinkers, people who are going to define the identity. And only by re-thinking you are re-discovering what's already there.
So, Designers have a great opportunity in Qatar, and with that comes great responsibility.

So, personally, I believe in the process of re-thinking more than designing. Design is ******! ;P

  3. Design (in the form of tool) is used to promote/advertise a culture, education, and causes to create awareness on greater issues. Design (in form of a movement) is used to shape a society's needs, wants, beliefs and principles.

If we take Qatar as an example, we can witness it promoting itself in a few directions. Luxury lifestyle (All the forms of high end consumer brands such as the Al Fardan, The Pearl, Hotels etc.) Education Center (Qatar Foundation) Political Voice (Al Jazeera)

Society's needs and wants are derived from its self promotion. High demand for luxury goods, more locals and foreigners becoming fellows at Qatar based educational institutes, and Al Jazeera becoming a trusted non-bias Middle Eastern voice.

All of this said, design is at it's shallowest and final stage, an embellishment and sometimes used to serve a personal agenda, advertising something as such when it lacks the core principle. Creating a facade.

The final product is a combination of all entailed above.
